After completing the design for his holiday cards, my client at My Private Brand asked me to move on to designing note cards. Our goal was to make these as simple, branded cards to be used for hand-written thank you notes and other correspondence. Simple, yet with a statement. I proposed an embossed design with his company’s monogrammed logo – a very classic look for personal stationery, yet a natural fit for this business-to-business application. A flood of gorgeous blue on the front with a raised logo, paired with his trademark brackets pattern on the back of the card to keep in theme with his first mailing of 2013. And a simple switch of ink color for the custom rubber stamp we made for his first mailing finishes off the look.

You’ve heard it said that the art of writing a letter or note is soon to be a lost art – or is it already? To that I say, “H-E-double hockey sticks, NO!” I may have just lost whatever street cred I possess. And successfully dated myself as a child of the 80s. Well, all of that aside, it seems to me that the ability to write a hand-written note, and possessing the tools for such an endeavor, is perhaps an essential life skill that should not be lost to the coming generations. Stay classy, San Diego.

In the Studio | Paper Goods for Baby

As many of you know, there will very (very) soon be the pitter-patter of little feet running around the Studio. Well, more like the sweet lullaby of newborn cries at all hours of the day (and night!), but you catch my drift. Mr. G and I are thrilled about the soon-to-be arrival of our little “Baby G” and I wanted to give you a peek into a recent personal project: party favors and thank you notes for our baby shower guests.

One of the millions of things I can’t wait to share with our little “Baby G” is the fun of watching hot air balloons sail nearby – sometimes directly over – our house. They seem to be a popular sport in this corner of the world, and I can just imagine the look of wonder in our little one’s eyes as they float by our front door, so close you could almost reach up and touch them! Thus came my inspiration for these pieces: hot air balloons + pennants + 2-dimensional geometric patterns. And since we are waiting to find out of “Baby G” is a he or a she, I worked in a gender neutral color palette of aqua blues, pistachio greens, and burnt orange, capped off with chocolate brown accents. Horton of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who seems to approve.

Parting favors for shower guests: yogurt-covered pretzels with a message from Baby G. All wrapped up in celo + baker’s twine.

“I hope you enjoy this little snack half as much as my mommy does. She’s been CRAVING them every day. Love, Baby Grubb”

Flat cards for a thank you message + whimsical envelopes liners. Up, up and away!

Sweet little details: a hot air balloon seals the envelope shut, while a Mark Twain stamp keeps with the “ragtime era” vintage feel.

A lot of times people hear the word “stationery” and their minds immediately jump to invitations… particularly wedding invitations. But let’s not forget the loveliness of a personal stationery set and the joy of receiving a hand-written note! Whether for personal use, or professional use, a custom-designed stationery set and calling card make a beautiful impression. Paired with a return address rubber stamp, a stationery set would make a lovely gift for the new graduate, for Father’s Day, or for personal use on the job market!

This set included envelopes in both khaki + olive green. Fun to switch it up!Simple calling cards with phone numbers and email do the trick! Love the feel of this textured paper.

If you recall, back in February I had a little Studio drawing at this Nashville affair, and one lucky bride won the Grand Prize: a set of 50 custom designed note cards! This bride and her attentive fiancé looked at several ideas for designs, from a monogram to a “Thank You” message. They finally settled on a more universal message saying simply: “Hello from Mr. & Mrs. Jennings.” They’ll be able to use these lovelies for a variety of hand-written notes and messages! Bright peacock blue envelopes coordinating with the peacock blue, burnt orange and chocolate brown of their wedding day colors. What a fun & crisp, modern design! And best wishes to the soon to be Mr. + Mrs. Jennings!

The lucky brides-to-be are Miss Megan Deising (winner of the custom return address rubber stamp) and Miss Leah Caudle (winner of the custom thank you note set). Congrats, ladies!! I am excited to design these items for you and look forward to posting them here on the blog.

I was delighted to show my stationery work at HER Nashville’s Bridal Brunch this past Sunday. We had an excellent turnout at Vanderbilt’s Commodore Ballroom and I am pleased as punch – or, should I say, mimosas! It was such fun meeting with lovely brides-to-be (and their attentive grooms-to-be) as we chatted stationery needs and paper goods in a lively, brunch atmosphere. I also had fun seeing which pieces caught the most attention – hello, lined envelopes & save the date postcards! A highlight for attendees was the fashion show, featuring gown trends for Spring 2011 (ruffles! ruffles! ruffles!). And a highlight for Design in August was not one, but TWO Studio Giveaways! Brides entered to win either a set of custom thank you notes OR a custom return address rubber stamp. I will be announcing the two lovely winners tomorrow. I love a bold colored envelope. I love how it sets itself apart from bills and other white noise the moment you glance at a stack of mail. These lovely peacock blue envelopes inspired this personalized note card set. A swirl of an ink pen and a splash of chartreuse in the monogram – I imagine this clean, modern design will inspire Ms. Wilson to script many a personalized note!

I’ve been making my list and checking it twice – lots to do before Christmas arrives! Things are hopping in the studio these days as I am wrapping up orders for custom Christmas cards, return address stamps and completing ephemera for Erica + Charles’ wedding next weekend. I’m excited to post about these projects over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, here is something lovely to munch on: a personalized note card set for Jan. Only it’s not for Jan.
